42 year clock

31"T x 9"W

black walnut, white oak, annual clock movement, steel

Mounting a specialized annual clock movement into this raw slab, the movement rotates 360 degrees only once per year and is made to travel along a track. The movement is attached to gear which runs the length of the slab, and is carefully geared so that the indicator (attached to the movement) travels the average distance of one of the slab's tree rings per year. Therefore, the indicator is constantly and invisibly moving at the rate of the tree's original growth, and will take 42 years to travel the distance of this log's section. Upon milling, a rich  black oxidization within the walnut crotch was found as a result from the tree having grown and enveloped around a set of nails which were embedded around the "26th year".
