300 YEAR MANTEL
62"W x 6 1/2"T x 8"D
white oak, brass
Acting as a mantel which occupies a sacred portion of the home, the piece uses the annual rings of a white oak tree as a measuring stick of time. Boards are carved to exactly 25 years in width and used for each drawer face - amounting to a 300 year representation of tree growth. Over time, historical photos and family artifacts produce an archive tied to the life of the its material. In the piece pictured, the mantel archives years 1865-2165, which positions the year it was made in the middle.
